C.H.I.R.P. Policy

CHIRP does NOT endorse or promote the deliberate, illegal spread of coquis in Hawaii. Besides the illegality of spreading coquis, we believe that it is not right to force people to live with the sound of coquis. We also support the right of homeowners to eliminate coquis from their property. Since the coquis are new to Hawaii, some people will have trouble adjusting to the new sound of the night. We realize that this is disturbing to some homeowners and others who have come to a pre-coqui Hawaii and now find themselves in an environment alive with the sounds of coquis. Change is always difficult, and not always desirable. However, since the government is claiming that the coqui is in Hawaii to stay, CHIRP's goal is the promotion of acceptance as a way to avoid environmental destruction and a reduced quality of life that come with a Frog War. Since the frogs are loved in Puerto Rico and other parts of the world for their sound (and appetite for insects), we believe that the current crisis in Hawaii is a temporary one, as people slowly adapt to the new sound and learn to accept, if not appreciate, the tropical sounds of the coqui.
